With water resources becoming increasingly scarce, the recycling of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater has attracted much attention. Some scholars have used ultrafiltration reverse osmosis to treat effluent from urban secondary sewage treatment plants. Studies have found that ultrafiltration reverse osmosis achieves treatment efficiencies of over 95% for total phosphorus, total nitrogen, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, and chloride ions in the treated effluent, respectively. This meets the "Water Quality Standard for Landscape Environmental Water Use in Urban Wastewater Reuse" (GB/T 18921-2002) and is suitable for landscape water use. Except for nitrogen, most indicators meet drinking water source standards.

Ultrafiltration membrane technology is also applied to the treatment of circulating wastewater from power plants, cooling circulating wastewater from mining areas, pulp and paper bleaching wastewater, and industrial wastewater from steel enterprises.
